That was so much fun and made it so much easier to relate to them. You will never meet roommates more unique than Simon Snow and Baz Grimm-Pitch! I love how their relationship progressed throughout the book and that we got to read their own POVs. I am not exaggerating here! I do not know if this is Rowell’s usual style but oh my God, if this is what all her books are like, I will devour them all with zero sleep! The humour seamlessly goes along with the plot and I loved it! 2. There were multiple points at which I had to stop reading because I was laughing too hard and the tears streaming down my face made it impossible to figure out what the words on the page were. But then something even more important happens: Baz, his evil roommate, doesn’t show up for their last year at Watford and Simon is determined to figure out why. His spells backfire, he has the worst luck and honestly he doesn’t trust himself to get anything right. The thing is: Simon sucks at being the Chosen One. Simon is the Chosen One who is supposed to battle the evil Humdrum, who has been shaking up the magical world with his evil shenanigans. If you want to see more, here is my tumblr tag (may contain spoilers).Carry On follows Simon Snow and his friends at Watford School of Magicks. The main romance is between two boys, beautifully written and not the sole focus of their stories – there is much more to ‘Carry On’ than its queer characters, but the queer characters are very well done. TL DR ‘Carry On’ includes (at least) one gay character, one bisexual character and two POC. The main cast also includes POC Penelope is of Indian descent, and Baz Egyptian on his mother’s side (though being a vampire has left him with unnaturally chalky skin). Just not in the course of the book.Īs well as the main romance, there is one minor queer relationship mentioned – Simon’s best friend Penelope’s roommate, Trixie, and her girlfriend whose name escapes me – but these characters never actually show up in person, just in conversation. But, being fair to him as well, he does have a lot more to worry about and not much time to stop and work out his sexuality. His thoughts on his own sexuality are a bit dubious – he does think in a black-and-white gay or straight way without considering other options, wondering more than once if being in a relationship with a boy means that he’s gay now. Simon’s sexuality is never really labelled, but he is most likely bisexual. Simon, on the other hand, starts off believing himself to be straight, and finds that’s not entirely true.

The plot is interesting, with Simon’s many problems including but not limited to political rivalries, saving the world and teenage relationships.īaz Pitch, Simon’s roommate and long-time enemy, is gay this is established early on and made inarguable. He has accepted his sexuality years before the beginning of the novel, and seems mostly comfortable in it (he has bigger things to be concerned with, to be fair). ‘Carry On’ may be a fantasy novel, with everything from mages and vampires to ‘fucking numpties’, but it is still a believable story with realistic, likable characters.

While ‘Carry On’ tells the story of the fictional characters featured in Rowell’s other novel ‘Fangirl’, you don’t have to have read it to understand the story – ‘Fangirl’ is still on my reading list, if only so that I can read whatever extra content it has of Simon and Baz. It features a romantic relationship between the two male leads which is very well written, with enough focus to be worthwhile without overshadowing the plot. It’s a fantasy novel, set at a school for mages during the final year of protagonist Simon Snow. ‘Carry On’ is (at the moment) my favourite stand-alone book – I have read it twice in as many months, and it is the first, and so far the only novel I have ever bought in Spanish as well as English.
